Maybe you’ve always known what you wanted to do since you were a young child, or maybe it’s something you’ve just recently begun to think about as you’ve planned your college life.

No matter which camp you fall into, choosing a career field is no laughing matter, and one you should take seriously. You don’t have to choose right away, but you should always be thinking about it.

There are several things you should consider when choosing your field of study, and while potential income is important, it is only part of the equation. Other things to consider include what your interested in, and how long you want to spend in school.

Majors that have the fastest growing number of jobs include those in medical, dental and law fields, although these will usually take the longest to complete. Computer software and engineering are also top choices and will lead to long-term work. Environmental technology is a great choice, as are engineering and finance. These are all degrees that will not only lead to job security, but tend to be well paying as well.

There are also more traditional majors like those in education, accounting, and even law enforcement. These are all good choices if you these are the fields you are interested in.

Whatever field you choose, it should be something in which you can make a decent salary and have some job security, but is still something you enjoy. Keep in mind that degrees such as those in social work, while highly respectable, are often low paying. This doesn’t bother some people, but if money is important to your career choice, you should factor all of these in.

Choosing your major is an important decision that should not be taken lightly. With the proper research, you can find the right career path for you.
