CATAWBA COLLEGE
HISTORY AND CAMPUS
Established in 1851, Catawba College is the sixth oldest college in North Carolina. It is a private, coeducational college, affiliated with the United Church of Christ, which has deliberately chosen to remain a four-year institution rooted in the liberal arts tradition. Its purpose is to enrich the educational experiences of students and to prepare these students for productive and meaningful lives of purpose following their graduation.
Catawba’s campus is located in the historic Piedmont City of Salisbury and consists of 30 buildings on 276 acres. It is a beautiful blend of neo-gothic architecture set on a shaded hillside adjacent to its own ecological preserve. Centrally located, it is only two hours away from the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina and four hours away from some of the best beaches on the Atlantic Coast.
ACADEMICS
A strong sense of community is fostered at Catawba. Caring and engaged faculty challenge and support new students making the academic transition from high school to college.
Catawba offers a variety of different majors, three undergraduate degrees, including Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, and Bachelor of Science, along with a graduate degree, Master of Education. While coursework is demanding, Catawba also effectively prepares students to both ponder the meaning of vocation within a liberal arts context and to ultimately pursue meaningful careers or graduate studies.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
First-Year Experience
All freshmen at Catawba enroll in a year-long First-Year Experience designed to help them make the academic transition from high school to college. Through an integrated set of programs, students are introduced to the interconnectedness of liberal and professional education. This increases their engagement with the social and intellectual life of the campus community. Then, through the development of critical thinking, reading, and writing capabilities, students begin their preparation to succeed in professional careers, to make meaningful contributions to the communities in which they live, and to continue to learn throughout their lives.
Honors Program
The College also offers a strong Honors Program, challenging able students with opportunities to participate in research and study with engaging faculty. Honors courses may feature travel components, and foreign study is available for those students seeking unique cultural and academic challenges. Recently, Catawba’s honors students have traveled to Ireland, Costa Rica, Estonia, Italy, Jamaica, and England.
Internships
Most disciplines on campus offer internship opportunities for students to enrich and supplement their classroom experiences. These internships range from semester-long positions with area businesses, corporations or governmental agencies to paid summer positions in various industries, including entertainment, medicine, travel, and tourism.
MISSION
Catawba’s seal bears four words: Scholarship, Character, Culture, and Service, and the College strives to develop these attributes in its students.
Students are encouraged to broaden their cultural perspectives, to strengthen their character, to become responsible citizens with a carefully crafted sense of community, and to enrich human life through their knowledge and personal talents. The liberal education and the academic degree they pursue equip them well for full and productive lives that matter.
