My College Guide has pointed out the unique trends affecting education majors before, and when we watched this education video, we knew we had to share! It’s no secret that here in the US children are lagging behind when it comes to anything STEM related (that’s science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

But education majors at St. Catherine’s University have a unique opportunity to regain a comfort level with math, science, etc. that, for many of them, they’ve never even had before – and afterward, they will be able to successfully pass that confidence and enthusiasm along to the children they teach in an effort to turn around the current trend.
The National Center for STEM Elementary Education at St. Kate’s is changing the way elementary teachers will teach! St. Catherine’s University is the first to create an engineering course for elementary education majors, to let any student have a STEM minor, and, of course, to require all elementary education majors to complete the three course STEM certificate!

Love the thought of study abroad? So did the American student below who now attends the University of Glamorgan in South Wales! One of the big perks of college is that the majority of colleges do have study abroad programs in place so whether you want to study for a semester, a year, or, like Angela from the University of Glamorgan, permanently: you’ve got the option.
In fact, the University of Glamorgan has partnerships with colleges like the University of South Dakota and the University of South Florida – so studying overseas at a college like Glamorgan may be easier than you think! Studying abroad is a life-changing, eye-opening experience, and one that most colleges believe is an essential aspect to individual growth — and a unique (and awesome) part of the college experience.

You asked us on the My College Guide Facebook Page for more information about college life and we’ve definitely answered! You wanted to know what it’s really like. We understand. So, we dug up a fun little video from Vassar College to give you a better idea of what college life (and a typical college day) is like — and there’s more where that came from!
You probably have your fair share of misconceptions about college: that it’s nothing but studying, or that it’s nothing but partying, but we wanted to show you actual college students during a normal day at college: what they think, what they’re wearing, and, more importantly, what they’ve learned in one single day. If fashion is your passion, you’ll enjoy watching Berkeley College students participating in Mercedes Benz Fashion Week! Whether you follow fashion or not, you probably have at least a small idea as to how big Mercedes Benz Fashion Week really is! But don’t think that these Fashion and Marketing Management students just sat around doing nothing, they were actively involved in preparing for the show, from dressing models to organizing the little details.
This is one of so many reasons why college is important – no matter where your interests lie, you can find majors, minors, and/or programs to fit your needs while gaining valuable life experience in the process. Work toward a degree while actually testing that your current career path is the right path for you – what’s not to love about college? Chances are you have been stressing about living in a college dorm. You may have decided to room with your BFF from high school or maybe you have been keeping your fingers crossed that you will end up in a single dorm room, anything than have to live with a complete stranger! My College Guide wants you to know that, just as college housing is probably not what you are expecting, there are also far fewer “dorm roommate nightmares” than you’d think.
Need more convincing? This video from Michigan State University features many dorm roommates – and they have plenty to say on the subject of college housing. College housing is not going to be as bad as you keep thinking it is – and hopefully watching this video will leave you feeling a bit more confident about the college housing process as a whole. For low income students, college might seem like an unreachable dream. The US Dept of Education hopes to change the way college is thought about to show that higher education really is for everyone. Produced for Spanish-speaking students, there are English subtitles.
If you have ever felt like college is unattainable, My College Guide has years of resources to aid you (we are twenty years old, after all!). Fill out the FAFSA and browse our list of colleges and universities for low income students. These colleges provide no loans packages (so you graduate debt-free), don’t have tuition, or offer full rides to students who fall within their income guidelines. Yes, there are Ivy League schools on here, and yes – some of these colleges are very selective.

My College Guide has seen plenty of campus slideshows, photos, and video on many a college website, but what we haven’t seen before is an interactive campus tour via YouTube! Instead of just watching a ho-hum video on YouTube, Saint Michael’s College let’s you choose your own adventure – it’s just like the books (but there’s no wrong choice and frantic page-turning here!).
While no campus video (awesomely interactive or not) can replace the traditional college campus tour, it is worth noting that it is a beneficial new tool to not only aid you in your college hunt but to get you excited about the college process. We know it seems like a whole lot of work but, trust us, it all pays off in the end! You may even learn a few things about a campus that you didn’t know before. College tour videos can also show you various campus buildings that may hold particular interest to you (Theater major? How does that auditorium look?). At the very least, you can’t help but get psyched about college life – and that can go a long way in ensuring your college success! Watch St Mike’s Interactive Campus Tour on YouTube or below.

Yearning for an Apple iPad? For college students at the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana, the Apple iPad is part of a normal day in class! Technology has leapt forward and students at the University of Notre Dame are moving along with it, by having a chance to make full use of the Apple iPad as part of an actual college course, not an iPad application development class.
Nicknamed the “iPad Class,” it is actually a course on Project Management, and, as you can see from the video below, Corey Angst, assistant professor of management, hopes that this unusual classroom accessory will help his students be at ease with technological trends and the coming digital revolution! This “iPad Class” has the University of Notre Dame students using the sleek device’s eReader capability for an electronic version of their required college textbook, as well as for note-taking needs – and many are making use of it during downtime, thanks to a slew of gaming apps.

My College Guide loves it when colleges (and their presidents) show off their sense of humor (remember the A Day in the Life of a College President video?). Well, Florida International University has jumped in with a witty musical twist to welcome back new and returning students for the Fall of 2010 school year!
When colleges combine song and dance, well, we just don’t think you can go wrong! Not only do Florida International University students get involved, but so does the college president, Mark B. Rosenberg! As you might be able to tell from the video, college is all about community! When you finally get in and get settled at college, don’t be afraid to wear your school colors, put on your college shirt, and jump in, even if it means acting silly every once in awhile: it’s all a part of having a fun, memorable college experience!
