Delaware: The Musical – A New Song and Dance

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

My College Guide has been waiting for this one!  After we caught wind of the Yale University Admissions That’s Why I Chose Yale Video, we were hoping other colleges and universities would feel inspired and also try their hand at admissions videos and make it all their own – and the University of Delaware definitely did!

The University of Delaware Office of Undergraduate Admissions got everyone involved and we mean everyoneDelaware: The Musical features members of college admissions, the Provost, the athletic director, UD President, professors, and even a special appearance from Susan Stroman, UD alum and Broadway producer – and a ton of student groups, bands, and choirs composed of past and current UD students!  They all lent a hand in the production of the video — in one way or another!

What’s really neat about this college admissions video is that even University of Delaware hopefuls had an opportunity to send in their thoughts and suggestions on what UD Admissions should include.  You can check out the images of prospective Blue Hen students who sent in their useful tips if you stick through to the credits.  Watch Delaware: The Musical on YouTubeand tell us what you think!

Students Helping Students: K-State Proud Pays it Forward

Friday, May 7th, 2010

College doesn’t just mean trying out new career paths or dabbling in new hobbies – although those certainly are important!  Consider college to be a launch pad, a starting platform, that you can use to change your life, if not the world — and the forward thinking students at Kansas State University are doing just that: one student at a time.

Kansas State University students organized K-State Proud: Students Helping Students.

After My College Guide saw the Students Helping Students YouTube video, we interviewed Anna Zeiger and Reed Pankratz, two co-chairs of the K-State Proud campaign in the hopes that it will serve to inspire and motivate you – and give you an idea of what you can accomplish if you have the passion and drive.  This KSU student group has even been recognized on the floor of Congress by Representative Jerry Moran.

So — how and when did K-State Proud begin?
Anna Zeiger:
It began 4 years ago with a small group of K-State students.  They came back from a national leadership conference with a lot of ideas and enthusiasm to start an all-student campaign on campus.  Since then, students have donated over $345,000 (through K-State Proud) to give back to their fellow students.

How do students get involved in K-State Proud?
Anna Zeiger: Anyone can donate to the campaign and they don’t just have to be K-State students; we receive significant support from family, friends, alumni, and fans.  Students who want to volunteer to help work the booth in the Union during campaign week, etc. should just be on the lookout at the end of the fall/beginning of the spring semester.

As a member and co-chair of the group, what has been your most memorable moment?
Anna Zeiger:
What stood out to me the most this year was the people. We had an amazing team of leaders working on the campaign, and the sense of camaraderie that we had coming together not only as a group, but as an entire student body, was phenomenal.

Anything else we need to know?
Reed Pankratz: The K-State PROUD campaign is more than a t-shirt and more than just raising money. It is a campaign that changes the lives of people who receive awards and also those who work with the campaign. This campaign is something truly special to our campus and reflects the type of student body we have at K-State.

Connecticut College Students Have Room to Rock

Friday, April 30th, 2010

You know that when it comes to dorm rooms, the common consensus is that space is always at a premium.  It’s bad enough you have to put aside your dreams of making it big in the music industry, at least while you pursue a degree, but — do you really have to leave behind your beloved guitar too?  For the musically inclined students at Connecticut College, the answer is most definitely NO.

We’ve never heard of a student group quite like this one! Over two decades ago, musically inclined Connecticut College students formed MOBROC, or Musicians Organized for Band Rights on Campus and it’s still going strong!  MOBROC members not only have a chance to network with like-minded students and potentially form bands based on these new connections – they also have a fantastic space to jam!  Conveniently located right on campus, MOBROC members use an old squash court, “the Barn” to practice, perform, and even store instruments.  “The Barn” is complete with a balcony and sound system!

MOBROC has been pumping out the talent in the more than two decades that the student group has been in existence, with bands like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Take Care.  Of course, MOBROC members also have plenty of chances to rock out at Conn College events.  For a peek inside “the Barn” check out the Student Bands at Connecticut College YouTube video!  It’s a good reminder that going away to college doesn’t mean giving up your dreams – it means finding an outlet (or creating one) to fulfill them.

VEISHEA: All That and a Cherry Pie

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Every college has something unique and special that you just won’t find anywhere else.  For Iowa State University, VEISHEA is definitely it!   Named by college Professor Frank D. Paine, Department of General Engineering, back in 1922, VEISHEA is an ISU classic, like apple pie, or in this case, cherry — more than 10,000 cherry pies are sold throughout the week-long event!

Part of the fun at Iowa State University's VEISHA!

What is VEISHEA?  It’s an acronym that stands for Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Industrial Science, Home Economics, and Agriculture, the colleges offered at that time.  Today, VEISHEA is on Facebook and Twitter (a great way to keep tabs on events) — even Iowa State University Twitters.  VEISHEA is definitely what we would consider event-FULL!

Past events have included hypnotism, a carnival, BMX Ramp Riders, a battle of the bands, 5K Run/Walk, Campus BBQ, Cyclone Idols (American Idol for ISU), guest speakers, and a two hour parade, to name a few!  Iowa State University’s large variety of international organizations puts on a huge International Food Fair, there’s also a Taste of VEISHEA, not to forget other fun activities like flag football, laser tag, and various basketball tournaments that make up a very small part of the week long event!

As if that wasn’t enough, the different college departments and student groups host various activities.  Search for things at the scavenger hunt (hosted by the Agriculture & Life Sciences Student Council), tinker with the Cyclone Amateur Radio Club equipment (one of the oldest student groups on the ISU campus, it dates back to 1913), or purchase a hissing cockroach of your very own from the ISU Entomology Club – even the Wiki says the hissing cockroach is a popular pet! Who knew?

You know how important it is to make the college campus visitwhy not make sure it’s a good one?  There is no rule that says that you can only visit a college campus once.  If you are having trouble narrowing down your list of colleges, why not make a second (or third), visit when something really big is going on, so you can associate with actual students and, like the case with VEISHEA, even the community.  It might just be the perfect opportunity to see how you think you’ll fit in with the college — and the community — at large!
