5 More Movies About College Life

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Movies about college life? My College Guide has them! Or, rather, we’ve compiled another fantastic list of college-themed movies. Hey, after all the work you’ve been doing to get into college, sometimes it’s nice to remember why you’re going in the first place!

Movies about college life? Grab the popcorn!

Movies about college life? Grab the popcorn!

They may not all be true to life, but they sure are entertaining! Your college experience will be what you make of it. So, how do you plan to use the next four years?

Movies To Make You Cheer for The Underdog

Rudy – This one finds its home as a sports classic. Rudy, played by grown up Goonie Sean Astin, is the blue-collar student who can’t afford college (guess he didn’t read My College Guide’s advice on financial aid!) but receives a sports scholarship that lets him in.

Good Will Hunting – How do you like them apples? Matt Damon and Ben Affleck star in Good Will Hunting. Matt plays the part of the genius janitor and Ben? He works construction. We love this movie for the snappy one liners and loads of talent (Robin Williams won an award for his part in this one).

Good Fun

Drumline – We admit: it can be a bit predictable, but Drumline put the fun back in band! Watch it for the awesome competition performance scenes. Even in college it’s a good idea to get involved in extracurricular activities! Remember the OK Go video that used college band students? What you do in college, well, it sure looks great on that resume later!

Movies to Watch with Your Girlfriends

Mona Lisa Smile – Julia Roberts stars as an art teacher at Wellesley College who wants to challenge the way the young girls think. Know what? Women’s colleges are still doing that today! Although, unlike the movie, women’s colleges really aren’t stuffy or old-fashioned. Star-packed and great for girls night.

Legally Blonde – Put away your pink scented paper, grab your Chihuahua and some popcorn, and settle in for this comedy starring Reese Witherspoon. The plot? She heads to Harvard University to get back her ex—and learns a little more about herself in the process. Chick flicks at their finest!

You tell us! What are some of your favorite college-themed movies? Let us know in the comments below! We may just add it to part 3.

5 Tips For Choosing the Best Vocational Technical School For You

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Looking into a vocational technical school? There’s a lot of them out there, so how do you find the best school for you? My College Guide has tips to help you find the perfect fit!

Vocational Technical School Tips

Vocational Technical School Tips

Class Size – How big are the classes and the classrooms? If large lecture halls aren’t your thing, make sure that the vocational technical school that you pick includes plenty of hands-on class time than book time.

Hands-On – The key to a successful vocational technical school experience is that ever-critical hands-on learning! How does your potential college compare? Check out the kitchen or the garage and see if the field you are interested in is complete. There’s no better way to learn the skills you need than actually getting in there and doing it for yourself!

It’s All in the Details

Retention Rate – Find out the percentage of students that continue on in their education. A high drop-out rate could mean that the program isn’t up to par. Students may be dropping out because the course just didn’t meet their expectations. Do your research and see what you can find. Your potential vocational technical school can supply you with this information.

Accreditation – My College Guide has said it before and we’ll say it again: Make sure your school is accredited! An accredited school can be your key to financial aid. Not only that, but choosing an accredited vocational technical school can mean that your degree will be taken seriously—and that the program is well-developed to help ensure your future success!

Modern and Tidy – As an adult going back to school, you need to make a visit! If you are interested in mechanics, check out the garage. Want to be a chef? Browse the kitchen! Is everything taken care of and in good shape? Does it look up to date and modern? You should expect a little wear and tear if the vocational technical school has a lot of hands-on class time (as it should) but in general, it should feel well-kept, welcoming, and modern! An outdated facility could be a big, giant sign that you may not necessarily receive the education you are paying for.

Tools of the Trade: Online Distance Learning Checklist

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Bring on your desire to begin your online distance learning – but you’ll need more than motivation to finish your online degree program! Check out My College Guide’s list of online distance learning tools of the trade. Figure out what you already have and what you need to know before you officially enroll and before that first day of class!

Your online distance learning checklist!

Your online distance learning checklist!

Online Distance Learning: Personal Checklist

Textbooks – For some online distance learning programs, your textbooks will be available completely online. For others, you will have to go to an outside source or your school’s online bookstore. You can cut costs if you consider purchasing new or used college textbooks! Make sure you plan ahead in case you need to buy or rent your college textbooks!

Time – You are a busy working adult. Are you ready for the challenges of balancing work and leaving time to study for school? Every online distance learning institution is different. Find out how many hours on average you will be expected to set aside for schoolwork and see how you can fit that into your schedule.

Tools of The Trade

Computer – A busted computer is not going to make your online distance learning experience an easy one! If you have a computer that is prone to crashes and lags, that won’t make your college experience very enjoyable. You’ll need something that will let you take quizzes and tests without getting you locked out! Some financial aid options will go towards the expense of a new computer or laptop. Fill out the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and see what how you qualify.

Reliable Internet – Do you have internet access? While the thought of heading to the library or stealing from your neighbor may sound appealing, not having access to the internet won’t work as an excuse for when you can’t turn in your research paper! You may want to consider getting your own internet service. Free up your time and make life a little bit easier on you (Psst! Even your browser can help with your online distance learning experience).

The Joys of Technology

Tech Support – Things happen. If there’s a glitch in the site or you can’t access a needed page on your college’s website, you’ll need the assistance of tech support! See if there’s an email address or working phone number that you can hang on to “just in case.” It’s reassuring to know good to that there’s somewhere to go for help!

5 Reasons Applying for the Pell Grant is a Smart Move

Monday, April 25th, 2011

Applying for the Pell Grant is a great way to ease the financial burden that going back to school as an adult can cause. In fact, it’s one of the best federal student aid programs available to adult learners. My College Guide gives you five reasons why!

Trying to figure out how to pay for college? Applying for the Pell Grant is a great first step!

Apply for the Pell Grant

Applying for The Pell Grant

Pell Grants are open to almost anybody. The only requirements? You have to have either a GED or a high school diploma, and be working on your first bachelor’s degree. That’s it. There are a few instances where they can be used for post-baccalaureate teaching programs, but those are few and far between.

Applying for the Pell Grant is easy. In fact, you’ll automatically be considered when you fill out your Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Pell Grants eligibility is based solely on economic need, so there are no essays to complete or hoops to jump through. And as a working adult? The easier it is to get something done, the better.

Convenient and Quick

Applying for the Pell Grant gives you flexibility. No matter whether you plan to attend school part-time or full-time, online or on campus, a Pell Grant could work for you. They’re accepted at most online colleges as well as their traditional counterparts, for both part and full-time students. In fact, as a part-time student, you can qualify for up to 18 semesters—so you can get your degree at your own pace.

Free Money for College

The amount of your Pell Grant is not set in stone. Pell Grants are calculated based on four factors—the amount of tuition, your family’s financial status, the size of your family and your enrollment status. So if your situation changes, the amount of your grant can too. Having a baby? Your award could increase. Transferring to a pricier college? You could get more help. Thinking about taking the plunge and going full-time? You guessed it—you could get a bigger grant!

Pell Grants range in size from $550 to $5500, with the average student receiving somewhere around $3500. And since they’re recalculated every school year, they can keep pace with the changes in your life. For adults going back to school, that’s really good news.

Best of all, you don’t have to pay Pell Grants back. Unlike student loans, money from federal Pell Grants is yours, free and clear. Meaning you can concentrate on your schooling—not on how you’ll make good on the loan.

It’s easy to see that for adult learners, applying for the Pell Grant just makes sense. But you better get cracking—the application deadline for the 2011-2012 school year is June 30th.

Benefits of Online College

Your Life, Your Way – It’s not very often that you get to call the shots but one of the big benefits of online education is that you don’t have a specific place to be. You’ll have a specific course  schedule for when assignments are due. So, you can complete assignments in your business administration class at 2 AM or 2 PM—it doesn’t matter.  On-campus courses just can’t compare!

Yes: There’s Still Community – Online college courses have come a long way. You won’t feel isolated from your peers at all. In fact, many colleges have special discussion areas so you can get to know and chat with your new online classmates. Some even have forums and allow online students to join on-campus activities and attend campus events. Now, is that one of the greatest benefits of online college, or what?

What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You (Financially)

Let’s Talk Turkey – Higher education isn’t cheap but you know that if you want to advance in your career or get your foot in the door in a brand new career, it’s a necessary addition to your resume. Rather unknown benefits of online college include the cost of classes—in many cases, it’s cheaper! In state or out, some higher education institutions charge the same amount and the cost of online courses can be a significant savings. That’s money in the bank!

Free Money for College: Even for Online Students – Did you know that even adults going back to school can still apply for and receive free money for college? Fill out the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and see if you qualify for financial aid. Your college will use this information to match you up to their own institution-based scholarships. Every non-traditional student should be sure to take advantage of awesome benefits of online college like this one.

What are You Waiting For?

There are plenty of reasons to consider beginning or finishing your college degree. The benefits of online education are many—why not see for yourself? You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Your future is waiting!

Paying for Your Online College Degree Program

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Worried about paying the bills after tacking on the cost of an online college degree program? You aren’t alone. The good news is: you have options. The even better news? There is free money for college out there—and My College Guide will tell you just where to look!

Paying for Online College Courses? You still have options!

Free Money For Online College Degree Program

It’s true. It doesn’t matter how old you are—as long as you plan on attending an accredited college, online or off, you can find and apply for money to help pay your way. There are three types of financial resources available. Going back to school doesn’t have to mean going into massive amounts of debt!

Grants

Grants are sort of like loans except: they don’t have to be repaid! If you are awarded a Pell grant, it’s like being handed free money just for attending your online college degree program. The easiest way to try to receive a Pell grant is to fill out the FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It’s fast to fill out and can help win you a grant or help you qualify for a government or private loan. You won’t know if you qualify until you fill out the form!

College Scholarships

Yes, even adults going back to school can find, apply for, and win a college scholarship! The trick is to start applying for scholarships where you completely match the criteria. If they only award a specific scholarship to Engineering majors, don’t apply unless you are an Engineering major! Scholarships are competitive so don’t waste your time applying unless you fit the requirements.

There are college scholarships for students of all kinds. Start with our list of college scholarship websites. Use between 2-3 sites and see what you can find—you might end up surprised! From unusual college scholarships to character traits (are you left-handed?) and those specifically for adults going back to college, there are scholarships out there to match any student. Why not try and find free money to pay for your online college degree program?

Loans

When you don’t quite have enough to pay for your online college degree program in full, many students turn to loans. Of course, using the above financial aid options can help you cut down on the amount of money that you have to borrow.

Be smart with your money. Take out what you need to pay for your college classes. Don’t think of a loan as free money—you’ll be paying this one back, but nothing says that you can’t make payments on your loan before you graduate! Compare providers and see who will give you the best interest rate and always proofread the fine print before you sign on the dotted line.

Beyond the Border: University of North Carolina Wilmington Study Abroad

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

A college education doesn’t begin and end in the classroom and it’s definitely not limited to the borders of your college campus. At the University of North Carolina Wilmington, you’ve got the world at your fingertips! As part of My College Guide’s study abroad series, we caught up to Education Abroad Director Mark Gallovic, who says it best, “Going to college today is more than just going to a campus for an education; it is about utilizing that campus as a springboard to the world.”

Step out of your comfort zone and explore the world!

Tell us all about it! What study abroad programs are offered at the University of North Carolina Wilmington?
The University of North Carolina Wilmington offers more than 500 education abroad opportunities in more than 50 countries! Every student interested in study abroad receives advising and support in finding the program best suited to their personal and academic goals. One can study abroad with a group of fellow Seahawks on a faculty-led program or at one of our many global partner schools. UNCW offers programs with internships abroad, service- learning components, honors courses, as well as foreign language classes or subjects in English. There is something for everyone, whether one wishes to study abroad for spring-break, a summer, a semester or full year. Students do not just attend UNCW, they are offered the UNCWorld.

What are a few of your most popular programs?
We offer many quality programs so that each student can find the program best suited to academic and personal goals. The most popular destinations include Australia, Spain, the U.K, Chile and South Africa. Some programs focus on particular majors. For example, we have a teacher licensure program in Belize, a Nursing clinical program in Peru, a Communication Studies program in the Netherlands, and more than 30 short-term and summer programs led by UNCW professors from a wide variety of disciplines. Students looking for something off the “beaten Path” will certainly have many exciting choices.

Thailand on your mind? It's one of 50 countries that you can choose between at UNCW!

Courtesy of the University of North Carolina Wilmington

Do you have any programs new to this year?
We offer new programs every year, based on the growing interest of our faculty and students. For example, this summer there will be an exciting new art program in Macedonia. New programs are also being launched in China, Sweden and Belize in areas such as Environmental Studies, Recreation Management and Criminal Justice. UNCW students also have new opportunities in Vietnam, Panama, and Morocco.

We noticed you have a Facebook Page for students interested in studying abroad – what other tips or tools are available to students?
Our tools and resources guide students through every step of the study abroad process, from program selection to pre-departure preparation to participation and return. At our annual fall Study Abroad Fair students can obtain information on programs and speak to program providers, international students from partner schools abroad and study abroad returnees. Students take the first step towards study abroad by attending one of our general information sessions, held twice weekly throughout the year. An education abroad professional takes the guesswork out of this transformative experience by providing one-on-one advising to each student. Students are also supported by a team of Study Abroad Ambassadors, returnees who are trained to support and share their expertise with peers. Finally, a comprehensive pre-departure orientation prepares students for a smooth, safe and successful experience abroad.

Don't just get a college education -- become a global citizen.

Courtesy of the University of North Carolina Wilmington

If a college bound student is thinking “study abroad” is there anything they should be doing to prepare in advance?
Make sure you select a school that truly supports and facilitates study abroad. Nearly every school will have some form of study abroad opportunities but they are not all equal in terms of quality, choice and support. When deciding on what school is right for you, look into the array of programs they offer abroad, the quality of those programs and the support services they offer to students looking to study abroad. The website of the school’s international office is a good place to start. The University of North Carolina Wilmington places a lot of emphasis on supporting every student on the path towards study abroad, overcoming obstacles to making that plan a reality and preparing our students to make the most of their experience abroad. Beyond that, there is nothing that one needs to do in advance of attending college other than perhaps discuss this interest with their parents and make a personal commitment to follow through with their goal to do it!

At My College Guide we often hear that a student would love to go abroad but can’t because they are afraid it would cost too much – is there financial aid available or are there programs that run a bit less than others?
Access to scholarships and financial aid for study abroad can vary by school but generally is available. Any financial aid one receives at the University of North Carolina Wilmington can be used towards education abroad programs, and one’s aid package will be adjusted based on all costs associated with such an experience (inclusive of one’s flight and passport). In addition to the multitude of study abroad scholarships available for students across the country, UNCW’s offers need- and merit-based travel grants.

One may argue, then, that in today’s global society, you cannot afford to not study abroad!

Courtesy of the University of North Carolina Wilmington

Additionally, exchange programs in which one pays UNCW tuition for a semester or academic year at a partner school abroad, can be just as cost effective as staying home. Expensive programs do exist, but so do many economical options. Recent research shows that a study abroad experience improves retention and graduation rates, grade point averages, and chances of getting a job upon graduating. One may argue, then, that in today’s global society, you cannot afford to not study abroad! Don’t assume it is too expensive before talking to a study abroad advisor!
