Gadget Watch

From the MCG 2008 edition
Here's our annual collection of new gadgets (and things that hold gadgets!). Some may not be within your budget, but maybe you can convince your parents to spring for one that the entire family can use.

HP C6180 Wireless All-in-One

Connect all your computers without wires to this printer/copier/scanner/ fax machine. This is really convenient if you have a laptop -- you can print documents while sitting on the sofa watching TV! Prints up to 32 pages per minute and photos in as little as 12 seconds. Six individual ink jet cartridges mean you only replace the ones that run out. A 50-sheet automatic document feeder ensures you don't have to hand-feed or make copies one at a time. The C6180 also prints photos and reprints, including borderless shots and panoramas, without a PC -- just insert your memory card. Price: $299.99 (before rebates) Available through www.shopping.hp.com and at Staples and Office Depot.

TiVo ToGo™

If you're lucky enough to have TiVo (that little box that automatically finds and records your favorite shows, games, etc.), consider downloading the TiVo ToGo software. You'll then be able to transfer your favorite shows from your TiVo box to your laptop (or PC) or transfer your favorite videos to your MP3 or other portable media device so you can take and watch them anywhere! Price: Free (if you have TiVo) Available through www.tivo.com.

Apple iPhone

A deliciously innovative blend of three products -- a camera phone, an iPod, and Internet on the go -- this lightweight handheld device is like something from the distant future. The widescreen iPod and phone features touch controls and the Internet communications device includes desktop-class email, Web browsing, maps and searching. The iPhone even syncs contacts and photos from your Mac or PC. Price: from $499 Available through Apple retail stores, www.apple.com and AT&T stores.

JanSport's LiveWireBT™Backpack

JanSport's fall 2007 collection of products includes the LiveWire+™ and the LiveWireBT™ backpacks that feature proprietary technology to allow the user to listen to an iPod® with an integrated remote control and cord management. Both versions have a six-button keypad (volume, forward, play, etc.) built into the right strap and the BlueTooth® version links to a mobile phone. A call-retrieve button on the left strap enables the user to stop music and switch to phone calls. V-loft pockets protect gear from the elements. But hey, you can just put your books, lunch or drink in there too! Available in black, polka dots or houndstooth. Price: $79.99 Available through Sports Authority and other retailers. See www.jansport.com.
